Puffins
Courting
I have been blessed with traveling to some wondrous places on the planet but sometimes you forget what is on your doorstep. My travels this time have kept me local on the British Isles where I have discovered a new land that holds a place in my heart.
Welcome to Skomer Island!
With just a short 15-minute boat ride away from the British mainland in Pembrokeshire you are greeted by the most wondrous site of volcanic rock island filled with wildflowers and wildlife. The welcoming community is fit for a King with the cheers of Razor Bills and Gillimots on the cliff edges, the groaning of seals, and the flight of 100s of Puffins surrounding the boat as you sail to the landing dock.
So who are these little creatures with their cute triangular eyes which scream innocence?
A Bird In Crisis!
With great happiness and joy which comes from our little Puffins with their fascinating and comedic lifestyle, there is also much sadness that comes with these beautiful birds in regard to their declining population. Even though they are not classified as an endangered species, the population in some locations is declining and so have now been put on the Red list of the UK bird conservation concern. Puffins are very sensitive to their environment and their winter location being vulnerable to overfishing which will leave the Puffins out of food, and pollution, in particular oil which not only makes them sick, it also destroys their waterproof feathers which are essential for survival.
For every Puffin picture I sell, I will donate 5% of my profit to the Wildlife Trust for Skomer Island to help with the preservation of these birds.
