Delicate Macro

When you look upon a macro image, it takes you to a whole new world. The tiny delicate detail, the texture and the sense of surrealism which makes macro photography fascinating.

Inspiration can be found anywhere. You just have to look and what people forget is in their own backyard. It’s a case of having to use your imagination to see beyond what is in front of you. The beauty with macro is that there is so much you can do with a restricted area.

The very basic definition of macro is the extreme close-up in photography creating life size visuals out of something very small.

The background is non essential, only to create a form of colour. All you need is a macro lens and a shallow depth of field. For those unfamiliar to this terminology, it is the small narrow area in an image with a blurred background whilst the subject stays in focus.

Shallow depth of field is a technical choice that helps to convey your artistic vision influenced by the aperture on your lens. The wider the aperture, the more light is let into your lens.

For me, I adore photographing the tiny or in photographic terminology, macro. When I look upon a macro image, it transports me away from a reality into a dreamy micro universe.

My garden is my playground and my classroom in order to create a beautiful narrative images. It’s hard work for maintenance but the results are so worth the efforts both visually and creatively.

The best time of year is the spring/ summer months where the flowers are in full bloom attracting the buzz from the bees to pollinate, as well as the wings of the beautiful butterflies.

Photography is all about creating that something different and unique. It’s easy enough to take a picture of the same thing as everyone else but how do you transform it into your own? What happens when you get on your knee, lie on the floor or a unique aerial shot? This is when photography becomes interesting and it is the most simplest things to do without any extra kit. Let your imagination run wild!

We doat upon the beauty of a flower but how often do we look actually observe the petals? For my flowers, I love how macro can reveal detail and textures which go unnoticed resulting in some amazingly engaging images showing off the beautiful colour and detail of the petals in ways that only a macro lens can achieve.

Over the last 7 weeks of lock down due to Covid-19 with no work or sports, I have enabled myself to become more creative with my imagery, to look around and see beyond the realm of reality.

Trial and error as well as experimentation allows me to understand our own mistakes allowing me to grow in my own technical ability as well as mindset.

There is so much beauty all around. It’s having to see beyond which is what photography is all about.
